U.S. PIRG-Supported Fair Elections Now Act Hits Critical Milestone

Over 100 House Sponsors on Bipartisan Campaign Finance Bill

WASHINGTON, Oct 9 - The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) reached a milestone today when the 100 and 101st members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed on to the bill.

Lisa Gilbert, Democracy Advocate for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, commented “This bill, sponsored by the Democratic Caucus Chair Rep. John Larson (D-CT), allows candidates the ability to seek office without depending on our current, inherently corrupting big money system.”

The 101 sponsors cover a wide spectrum of states; new and veteran members; conservative, moderates, and liberals, and rank-and-file as well as leadership members.

Gilbert added, “As the debate on healthcare, energy, and financial regulation continues to dominate the media, the power plays of influence-peddlers are brought to light with alarming regularity.

“It has become abundantly clear that we need to free members of Congress from both the constant pressures of fundraising and the appearance of pandering to the corporate special interests.”
