As Congressmen Ney and Hoyer release their long-awaited election reform bill today, the U.S. Public Interest Research Group has reaffirmed its support for the Equal Protection of Voting Rights Act of 2001 (S.565/HR1170), introduced by Sen. Dodd and Representative Conyers.

Responding to concerns that U.S. election procedures are still subject to some of the same problems that plagued the 2000 presidential elections, U.S. PIRG called for states to implement ten tips to make the November 2004 election as open and accurate as possible and to move toward five reforms that should be adopted for future elections.

Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board upholds an Indiana state law that requires voters to present a state issued photo identification. In a 6 to 3 decision, the Court determined that voter fraud takes precedence over burdens the law places on voters.

An important step toward a widely heralded reform was taken yesterday by the Joint Committee on Election Laws on Beacon Hill. After several months of review, that committee released HB646, an Act That Would Establish Election Day Registration in Massachusetts, with a favorable report.
