The rules package announced by Speaker–elect Nancy Pelosi and the new House
leadership challenges the culture of privilege and entitlement that has existed
for too long on Capitol Hill.
Bans on gifts and travel paid for by
lobbyists and new rules for earmarks speak to the new leadership’s understanding
of the public’s anger and frustration over the recent scandals. In short, the
voters spoke and Congress listened. It is a promising start to the new
Congress.
Should these rules be adopted, U.S. PIRG looks forward to
working with the Speaker-elect on independent and professional enforcement of
the rules and disclosure of the activities of lobbyists. Enforcement, in
particular, is critical if Congress hopes to establish accountability among
members of Congress and restore the faith of the American people.
