Washington D.C.: U.S. PIRG Statement Supporting Senator Dodd’s Amendment to End Insurance Rescissions

WASHINGTON D.C., July 9, 2009 – Recent Congressional hearings have brought to light the brutal practice of rescinding health care coverage, even after a policy has been bought and paid for. When beneficiaries are diagnosed with an expensive illness, like cancer, insurers comb through their paperwork for excuses to dump the patient’s coverage. In one recent House hearing (view video here), insurance executives brazenly refused to change this practice, even if it means that Americans will die.

By passing Senator Dodd’s amendment (press release on amendment) to health reform legislation, the Senate HELP Committee can move toward banning these unconscionable insurance industry abuses. On this critical issue, we urge Senators of both parties to stand up for American families’ health care, not the insurance lobby.”
