Washington, D.C.: STATEMENT on Blue Dog/Waxman Cost Containment Deal

From Larry McNeely U.S. PIRG Health Care Advocate

“Experts estimate that thirty percent of health care spending is wasted on ineffective care, pointless red tape, and counterproductive treatments that can actually harm patients.

U.S. Public Interest Research Group wholeheartedly applauds today’s reported agreement by Chairmen Henry Waxman (D-CA), the White House, and the Blue Dogs to contain these unneeded costs by:

•    Taking the politics out of Medicare payment policy by placing decisions in the hands of a new Independent Medicare Advisory Council

•    Creating a Center for Innovation that will transform the incentives within public programs to ensure that beneficiaries are get better care for less taxpayer investment.

With these newest changes, HR 3200, the American Affordable Health Choices Act, fully delivers on President Obama’s state goal of reining in skyrocketing health care costs. We urge its immediate passage.”
