Massachusetts: MBTA Abandons Fare Hike Proposal

Twelve workshops for public input canceled

BOSTON, August 11 - The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) canceled their proposals to raise fares and cut service, along with public workshops and a hearing scheduled to vet those proposals. The fare hikes would have been the fourth increase since 2000.

“We raised our voices and now they’re not raising fares,” says Lizzi Weyant, staff attorney at MASSPIRG. “We hope that this means that the MBTA heard the public outcry around fare increases and service cuts.  We hope that this gives the legislature the opportunity that it needs to find a way to fully fund public transportation.”

Since the Secretary of Transportation James Aloisi announced in June that the fare hike proposals were forthcoming, the public has clamored for a better, more comprehensive solution to the T’s struggling financial situation.
