Washington, D.C.: Statement from Nicole Tichon on the House passage of the Weapons Acquisition Bill

Statement from Nicole Tichon, U.S. PIRG Tax & Budget Advocate on the passage of the

Weapons Acquisition System Reform Through Enhancing Technical Knowledge and Oversight (WASTE TKO) Act of 2009 (H.R. 2101)

WASHINGTON, May 14 – The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Weapons Acquisition System Reform Through Enhancing Technical Knowledge and Oversight (WASTE TKO) Act of 2009 (H.R. 2101), 428-0, on Thursday.

With the bill now set to go to conference committee where the differences will be reconciled, US PIRG and its partners will continue to fight for the strongest possible bill.

“The conferees need to be sure that the bill is not undermined by weakening, poisonous amendments or watered down language on critical reforms,” said Nicole Tichon, Tax and Budget Reform Advocate for U.S. PIRG.

Tichon notes that the final legislation should include the strongest language possible around independent cost assessments, increased competition, transparency around the waiver process and conflicts of interest.

“It would be a real disservice to the leaders on this bill and to the American taxpayers if Congress in any way squanders this opportunity to make real and significant changes to an ailing process,” Tichon said.
