What's New

24th Trouble in Toyland report is a hit

Due to overwhelming interest in the 24th Trouble in Toyland  report and new interactive website, on Dec. 7 U.S. PIRG launched two new social media sites - http://www.facebook.com/toysafety and http://www.twitter.com/toysafetynews.

Since the launch date of the report and the site on Nov. 24, over 20,000 people have used http://www.toysafety.mobi, which Mobithinking recently called "mobile site of the week."

Almost 20,000 people have accessed the Trouble in Toyland report and more than 30,000 have checked out U.S. PIRG's toy safety page.

The report and site have also received nationwide media attention and were featured in the Washington Post, on CNN-Money, ABC's "Now You Know," and in or on almost 100 other broadcasts, newspapers, and online news sites and blogs across the country.

The 24th annual Trouble in Toyland survey focuses on three categories of toy and childrens' products hazards:
  • toys and items that may pose choking hazards,
  • toys and items that are excessively loud, and
  • toys and items that contain the toxic chemicals lead and phthalates.

The interactive website http://www.toysafety.mobi – accessible by smart phone and home computer - can help parents and other toy-shoppers avoid common hazards and report potential dangers they find on toy store shelves, right from their mobile phones or home computers.

Overview

While most toys on store shelves are safe, we continue to find toys that pose a range of safety hazards to small children. As a result, parents and other child-care providers need to remain vigilant in order to prevent toy-related deaths and injuries.

Recently, U.S. PIRG broadened the scope of unsafe toys to include toys labeled as phthalate-free. Our analysis last year shows that even some products labeled phthalate-free contain the dangerous chemical.

Toy manufacturers should act swiftly to recall unsafe products and give parents the information they need to allow them to purchase safe toys for their children. U.S. PIRG and our allies have prompted recalls or regulatory action on over 100 toys.

U.S. PIRG discovered that paint in this preschool book contains 20 times the legal level of lead, a potent neurotoxin that can lower IQ and lead to a host of developmental problems. Researchers alerted the CPSC and on Jan. 8, 2010, the product was officially recalled. Learn more here.

U.S. PIRG has also launched a new, interactive mobile phone tool and website. This simple interactive tool allows shoppers to check on possible hazards while at the store, or before they go shopping, as well as report hazards they find.

There is also an iPhone Toy Safety app, available for free at the iTunes Applications store.
