Reforming Health Care

Making Health Care Work

America's health care costs are skyrocketing, threatening the future of families, small businesses and the nation as a whole.

Premium costs are going up at four times the rate of wages, while millions of Americans can't find security or peace of mind because insurers have the power to deny care if you get sick or have a pre-existing condition.

By passing health reform legislation this year, Congress can 'make health care work' for all of us.

After the House passed health reform legislation on Nov. 7, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) health reform bill now faces a lengthy debate and amendment process on the Senate floor, as well as all-but-certain attempts to block the bill with a filibuster.

Winning Senate passage will require an all-out effort by reform supporters to explain what the Senate legislation will mean for Americans:

1. No more denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

2. Doctors will have access to the best information on what treatment is good for you.

3. More preventative health care that will save money and keep you healthier.

4. Less red tape and antiquated systems that cost extra.

5. More competition between insurers and more choice for you.

Overview

Every year, Americans pay more and more but get less and less when it comes to health care.

Spiralling health care costs have driven the average job-based family insurance plan to more than $12,000 a year, and that price tag and is expected to double by 2016.

America’s health care system is structured for drug industry, insurance company, and medical specialty profits, not better health outcomes for you.

As the new Congress and Administration take up health reform, U.S. PIRG is fighting for affordable health care that every family can depend on by:

  • Stopping insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions.

  • Trimming costly red tape and overhead through simplified insurance forms, information technology and insurer-efficiency standards.

  • Rewarding personalized care from your provider and prevention, not just endless tests, procedures and emergency room visits.

  • Giving every patient and doctor the most up-to-date information on which treatments and medicines work best.

  • Making insurance plans compete for your business, by letting Americans choose the care that’s right for them: keep the coverage they have, choose another private insurance plan, or select a quality public health insurance option.

On Nov. 3, U.S. PIRG helped bring the owners of 134 small businesses from all over the country to Washington, D.C. Bakers, shopkeepers, nurses, lobstermen and others attended 70 meetings on Capitol Hill, met with White House officials, and spoke at a press conference with Senate leaders.
