Tax & Budget Policy ActionsOther ActionsTell Your Senators to Support the Contracting and Tax Accountability Act of 2009
The federal government spent $422 billion in taxpayer funds last year on outside contracts. It is the fastest growing portion of federal discretionary spending, increasing by 100 percent between 2000 and 2006. We have all heard of the scandals involving Halliburton and Blackwater. But we need to stop contractors like these from getting government jobs in the first place. Please call your senators and urge them to support the Contracting and Tax Accountability Act of 2009 (S. 265) which will block all would-be contractors who fail to pay their taxes. You can reach your senators and representatives at 202-224-3121. If you don't know who they are, that's OK. Just tell the operator your zip code, and they will connect you. Then, please report your call below, so we can keep track of how many calls are made. Call to Close Loopholes
It’s time for Congress and the President to pass into law
major reforms of our tax system. U.S. PIRG
has been talking to members of congress and to the media about this distinct
opportunity to clean up the books and stop passing the burden onto ordinary tax
payers who don’t have access to slick lawyers and shady tax planners. To reach the U.S. Capital switchboard, call (202) 224-3121, and ask to be connected to your Representative and/or Senators.
