Students Not Banks
Students Not Banks!
Please take a minute to call your Senator and urge him or her to support President Barack Obama’s budget proposal for higher education.
This June and July, our federal lawmakers will be crafting a bill that may or may not support the President’s plan.
You can help ensure that the higher education pieces of the budget make it through both chambers of Congress over the next several months. Because the educational investments are paid through by cutting excessive lender subsidies from within the loan programs, the banks will lobby heavily to stop this proposal from advancing.
The proposal invests $25 billion to make the Pell grant increase won in the economic recovery package permanent. Students and families of modest means will be able to count on consistent Pell grant funding year in and year out. In addition, the proposal makes the higher education tax cut for students and families permanent.
You can reach your Senator member by calling him or her at 202-224-3121. If you don't know who your House member is, that’s fine. Just tell the operator your zip code, and the operator will connect you.
Here's a sample message you can leave: "Hi, my name is _______, I’m a student from _____/parent of a student going to college. I’m calling to ask that Representative ________ support President Obama’s budget proposal for higher education, which increases grant aid and makes the higher education tax cut permanent.”
