Take A Stand On Textbook Prices
Last month, we won a huge victory to lower textbook prices. The U.S. House passed the College Opportunity and Affordability Act, which would help curb rising textbook costs.
We’re not done yet. Now it’s time to make sure it gets through Congress! Sign our petition: Textbook costs can be a serious financial burden on students seeking an affordable education. According to the GAO, the average student spends around $900 per year on textbooks, which is about a quarter of tuition at a typical state university, and more than half of tuition at a community college.
Congress can make textbooks more affordable by including three critical provisions from the House language in the Higher Education Act reauthorization bill: 1. Require publishers to provide faculty with textbook pricing information, so they can make informed choices.
2. Require publishers to sell all textbooks and supplemental items separately, so students are not forced to purchase costly bundles. 3. Ask schools to include the list of textbooks during course registration, so students can make informed choices and seek lower prices.
